Questions to Ask Your Doctor

Your family doctor is there to provide you with the best care available.  With the recent advances in research and medicine there may be a number of treatment options available to you.  Being prepared to speak with your doctor about your options could help you get the care you require in a manner and time frame that is most acceptable to you.

Knowing what to ask your family doctor about potential surgery will ensure that the treatment you will be receiving is right for you, which can provide peace of mind as you progress on your patient journey. Prospective surgical patients can use the following questions to help guide their discussions with their family doctor.

Why do I need to see a specialist?
Are there other treatment options available for my condition that I could consider?
If I require surgery, how long will I wait?
Why are you referring me to this particular specialist?  How long is their wait list?
If this specialist has a long waiting list, is there another specialist in the city who can provide this same treatment sooner?
I’m willing to travel to another Saskatchewan city to shorten my wait time. What are my options?
